    Bagpipe

...as we have been what we are...

We are a modern pipeband as they're known from scotland - JUST COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. We're intentionally musically differnet from traditional pipebands - away from the mass instrument towards more individual. In contrast to many other pipebands we're a non-competing, performing band.
To do this, we interpret and expand scottish/irish music with our own style -leaned on the ease and fun of irish folk music. Of course we are always strive to regard the traditional roots of this musical genre, but nevertheless try to think "out of the box". More to this on our music page. We also use beside the traditional instruments great highland bagpipes and drums further instruments to get more versatile arrangements of our music - see also the instruments page.
But how did we manage to evolve like this?

    Short biography of the band:

  • 1995: First union as Highroad Pipes & Drums (a.o. Thomas & Robert Reibl and Bernd Mößle)
  • 1999: In the meantime as part of Claymore Pipes & Drums from munich
  • 2001: Reestablishment of the Highroad Pipes & Drums with hub in Memmingen
  • 2012: first tries to combine folk music more directly with our pipemusic
  • 2013: Relaunch as Highroad
  • Bandskizze

Everything began in a small bavarian village named Hawangen in the year 1990. Brothers Thomas and Robert Reibl began their first self-educated steps on the bagpipes. Little by little they got to know more and more pipers from the german pipeing scene. 1995 they formed a union with some other pipers (a.o. Robert Reibl and Bernd Mößle) to the first formation of the Highroad Pipes & Drums. Due to the high distance of the young members, some of them got connected around 1999 to the Claymore Pipes & Drums from munich, the others got part of the Ehingen Donau Pipe Band. Two nice and instructive years later (2001) the Highroad Pipes & Drums were reestablished from some of the "old" members with their hub in Memmingen. In the following years we experimented a lot with our music - based on the traditional basics - improved ourselfs and met a lot of musicians in and outside of the piping scene. In the beginning of 2013 the band was relaunched under the simple name Highroad.

We're all just hobby musicians in different age ranges from all parts of the Allgäu and beyond. Locations of our gigs are mainly in bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and even austria. But from time to time we played also in some distant places like Paderborn or switzerland.
On certain occasions we wear different outfits. Our members are musicians from different styles and genres and play on different levels - from beginner to advanced. New members are always welcome and if needed are teached within the band. If you are interested, just contact us.

We are no registered association, but rather a kind of aggregation of interests. Our main interests are: Fun with (scottish/irish) music, companionship with each other and other musicians and friends of the scottish/irish culture. Nevertheless we never put the typical musical pretension, as known from "classical" pipebands, in the background.
To summarize, we're a quite crazy crowd (and we want it that way) with much fun on our music, which we always try to share with our listeners. Our musical pretension is important for us, but we take ourself not seriously everytime. This can be also seen in our outtakes gallery and the humour page

    Our tartan:

Our tartan is of clan MacKenzie. Each clan has different variants of his tartan, our's is the so called "MacKenzie Ancient". Here the colours are less intensive compared to most other variants.
Other possible tartan variants are named for example after the occasion to be weared (modern, dress, hunting, weaeth, faded weath, ...) or after decent locations, regions, ...
